Kristi Toliver (or David Adkins), James Posey (or Larry Harris), and even Steve Nash may all be familiar names. This article will give you a brief overview of their roles and backgrounds.

David Adkins

The Washington Wizards have hired David Adkins as their new assistant coach. Adkins has extensive experience in the NBA, having developed more than a dozen players. He has also worked with several Division I athletes, including Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Linas Kleiza of the Toronto Raptors, Greivis Vasquez of the Memphis Grizzlies, and Austin Freeman of Georgetown. Adkins has also been a mentor to many Maryland basketball players such as Tianna Hawkins (Terrapins) and Alex Len (Terrapins).

Washington area has been abuzz about Adkins' inclusion to the Wizards’ coaching staff. Adkins is a former coach of Deni Avdija's Wizards. He has a long history of developing players. Adkins ran a successful business detailing cars in Northern Virginia before joining Wizards.

Kristi Toliver

Kristi Toliver joined the Washington Wizards' staff for two seasons and was then hired by Dallas Mavericks. Toliver, a former WNBA champion, is currently the Mavericks coach in the Western Conference finals. She is a threetime All-Star from Wizards and was previously on their staff. Toliver returned to Los Angeles after her playing career to assist the Sparks in their 2016 WNBA championship. Toliver joined Wizards as an assistant coach in February 2018, but was forced to sit out due to the COVID-19 virus pandemic.


Toliver was a member of the Wizards' training camp and coaching staff during the 2018 NBA Summer League. She has been a WNBA player for ten years. She was a two-time All-Star in 2016 and won a WNBA championship in 2016. Toliver was drafted 3rd overall by Chicago Bulls after playing college basketball for Maryland Terrapins.

James Posey

James Posey is now the Washington Wizards general manager. Posey, 46, played 12 seasons in the NBA, winning two championships with the Miami Heat and Boston Celtics. He is an experienced and versatile role player. He has a long and varied history in the NBA, including an experience as an assistant coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Posey is an assistant coach to Washington Wizards head coach Wes Unseld Jr. He also served as an assistant coach to the University of Virginia women’s basketball team. Posey has yet to be named, but the move will take over the position left vacant by Mike Batiste's relocation to Houston.

Larry Harris

If you've been following the Washington Wizards for a while, you know there is a lot uncertainty within this franchise. It was important that Jerry Grunfeld be fired. However, it was also necessary to hire a coach. Washington needs a coach who is available immediately.

The Wizards have nearly $90MM in salary cap commitments for 2019/20. They have a number of empty roster spots and many key contributors are set to hit the free agent market this summer. Thomas Bryant and Tomas Satoransky are two of those players, who both will become restricted free agents. Another key contributor will be Bobby Portis, who will hit the open market this summer.
